When Jaiona was pregnant with her first child, she and her partner, Malik, began researching early childhood education programs. They wanted more than a place for her children to spend the day. They wanted a school that would care for them, help them learn important life skills, and support her as a parent.
That search led their family to Head Start.
"It's not daycare,” Jaiona said. “Head Start helps them learn.”
From teaching foundational skills like potty training to sending home activities, Head Start helps ensure learning continues beyond the classroom.
Family involvement has become an important part of their Head Start experience. The pair makes a point to participate in center activities whenever possible.
"I want my kids to see I'm involved. To think, 'Oh, my mom is here!' It makes them more excited for school,” said Jaiona.
Last year, Malik was involved with his Early Learning Center’s father engagement initiatives, encouraging male presence in early education.
Head Start’s support extends beyond education. When questions or challenges arise, staff members are ready to help connect families with resources.
"They'll hand out resources. They helped us with diapers and the things you need as a parent.”
This year, while Malik attended barber school and worked toward building a better future for the family, Head Start continued to provide stability and encouragement.
That support became especially meaningful after the family experienced a fire. Head Start stepped in to connect them with essential resources, including clothing, shoes, and winter coats.
For Jaiona and Malik, Head Start has helped their children grow, encouraged family engagement, and provided support when they needed it most.
