Alyssa first heard about Head Start at a community baby shower. At the time, she didn’t know much about the program, but she knew she wanted to set up her son, Elijah, for success.
When Elijah started Head Start, he was very shy. He rarely talked and would cling onto his mom at school drop-off. Now, in his second year of Head Start, Elijah has grown significantly. He’s more independent, excited to go to school, and has made countless friends.
“When he first started Head Start, he didn’t really talk,” Alyssa said. “Staff were worried about speech problems. But now he talks really well and loves school.”
Alyssa’s one-year-old daughter, Ella Mae, is enrolled in Early Head Start, giving her the chance to start learning and building routines early. Alyssa wanted Ella Mae to be prepared from the very beginning, and Early Head Start gave her peace of mind knowing her daughter is developing socially and emotionally alongside trusted caregivers.

Head Start has supported Alyssa, too. With support and guidance from Head Start staff, she had the time, resources, and encouragement to focus on her own goals. Alyssa went back to school and earned her high school diploma, something she’s incredibly proud of. With that milestone accomplished, she’s now exploring going to college and considering a future career that will allow her to help others.
Along the way, Alyssa found community. She stepped out of her comfort zone, connected with other parents, and built lasting relationships. She even joined the parent committee to stay involved, share her experiences, and help strengthen the program for other parents and children.
She says the teachers make all the difference.
“They’re amazing teachers,” she shared. “They definitely help a lot. I’m super grateful for all the staff. They’re all awesome.”
