Why I do this work
I'm an empath by nature, so I naturally put myself in other people's shoes. I think about how overwhelming life can be, especially when someone is facing an unexpected crisis or simply doesn't know where to turn. That inspires me to be a voice for others and to help connect people with the resources and support they need.
Angela Graves serves as Vice President of Communications and Outreach at Step Forward, where she leads the agency's communications strategy and public engagement efforts. She oversees media relations, digital communications, social media, website management, publications, brand strategy, and signature events, helping ensure Step Forward's message, identity, and community presence are consistent across every platform and touchpoint.
Before joining Step Forward, Angela spent 12 years as a television journalist, working as a news anchor and investigative consumer reporter. Her reporting earned five Emmy Awards, along with honors from the New Mexico Broadcasters Association and the Society of Professional Journalists in Indiana.
Angela brings her experience in storytelling and strategic communications to elevate Step Forward's visibility, strengthen community trust, and support the agency's mission. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and a Master of Communication with a certificate in Crisis Communication from Ohio University's Scripps College of Communication.
What's one value that guides your leadership?
Empathy. I believe people should always come before titles, job descriptions, or pay grades. I also believe in thinking big, challenging the status quo, and never settling for "the way we've always done it."
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I'm a mom to three young children, so life outside of work is filled with school events, sports, and family adventures. I also enjoy staying active and making the most of every moment we have together.
What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I used to compete as an amateur bodybuilder. These days, you'll probably find me cheering on my kids from the sidelines or at home with my Chihuahua, Hippo.
