Why I do this work
I'm deeply inspired by the opportunity to strengthen families and help create real pathways to stability in our community because I've lived it. As a mother of four and grandmother of two, this work is personal. I became a mom at 17 and relied on community benefits during some of the most challenging seasons of my life. I've also experienced the unimaginable, parenting a child whose life changed after a brain tumor caused severe vision loss. Those experiences stay with me. They fuel my commitment to ensuring every family has access to the support, dignity, and opportunities they need not just to survive, but to truly move forward.
Laurie Leverrette serves as Vice President of Community Services at Step Forward, where she oversees the agency's Community Services and Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). She brings more than 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience, with a strong background in housing stability, emergency services, early childhood education, and food access.
Laurie has led large-scale, publicly funded programs that support tens of thousands of families each year, including utility assistance programs such as HEAP and PIPP and Emergency Rental Assistance efforts funded through the CARES Act. She is experienced in navigating complex compliance requirements while ensuring services are delivered efficiently and equitably.
Laurie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Family Psychology from Cleveland State University and has been recognized by the Ohio Department of Education for her work in early childhood education.

Equity. Ensuring every decision we make expands access, opportunity, and dignity for the individuals and communities we serve.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I'm a dedicated strength trainer who enjoys lifting heavy. I also love writing, singing, songwriting, and poetry. As a performer, I've had the opportunity to open for Motown legends The Contours and The Drifters at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
People are often surprised to learn how deeply rooted my service is. I've spent time in prison ministry and youth ministry, and I'm also actively involved in the arts as a writer and performer.
